I don't really know what I expected going into this but it's a good book. I liked Charlie Hall and there was a lot of action! I don't know what exactly but something was missing for me though.

I like the mystery aspect of it and also the reveal at the end! The whole revenge aspect of it was quite satisfying to read about as well.
I guess I was only scared that she would fail and because of that I was constantly on edge while reading.

This book wasn't the most fun time but it was definitely entertaining. And I think especially people who like their books a bit more brutal will like this.

I do have to say that I am quite confused by the worldbuilding still. I don't quite understand what exactly it is that shadows do and what they are? Also the magical powers seemed quite random. You can just do what you want? Also what are Cabal and Carapace and all those important people? Why do you need a Hierophant? Why did no one check if the Shadow took over?
Well anyways I have loads of questions and I really hope they will get resolved in book 2. (Oh and I hope it's a Duology because I feel like the story should have been a standalone and I hope it won't just be stretched out..

I think mainly what I didn't like where the flashbacks. Not because they were bad but because I didn't like the things that happened. It was great because that way we got to get to know the characters but still.
I really dislike Charlie's mum and I have to say I don't particularly like her sister either.. I did really like Vincent though but oh well hahah

Also wtf is wrong with Adeline!? I really dislike her and I feel like she is a lot like her father.. I don't understand why Vincent kept her picture? I don't get the whole thing with her and Remy.. honestly just very weird vibes.. I'm pretty sure she is going to be the villian of book 2.

The ending was great though. I saw a few things coming but definitely not all of them! If I could I would start reading the second book immediately! So I'm absolutely going to pick it up when it comes out :)

The worldbuilding feels natural and textured. The characters feel real and complex. The story is engaging emotionally and in terms of action, while allowing for the reader to allow down and process. The foreshadowing is excellent, and even I "called" the ending, I was still surprised and satisfied, like I solved a puzzle instead of predicting a story.

I am so in love with the protagonists. I'm very excited for the second in this duology.

A fun ride, but I wanted more from Holly Black's first foray into adult fantasy. The world building felt incomplete, the characters felt a little flat, and the mystery didn't get really excited until the last 20% of the book. I'm hoping the sequel will be better! Also, I'm gong to need authors to stop using
incest
as a plot device.

This was a slow burn for me, but I guess it’s ramping up for the series, with lots of world building. In this urban fantasy, shadows have power if they become separate entities, but remain attached, they provide power to the wearer, but If the shadows become completely separated they become a blight. Charlie Hall is a bartender/thief, and she’s kind of a screw up, from her love life to her choice of careers. She lives with her boyfriend, Vince, a kind of unknown entity and her sister Posey. Charlie and Posey’s mother had a string of loser boyfriends, but one, Rand, introduced Charlie to thievery. On  one unfortunate job, Rand and Charlie went to Lionel Salts house, Rand wound up dead and Charlie barely escaped. This is the beginning of Charlie’s story. Holly Black writes the most amazing urban fantasy and this series will not disappoint.

Loved the first bit of the book and was a bit confused why I had seen so little about it or not so great reviews. Then, I reached a couple of interesting points. Won’t add here for spoilers but basically there was a way to write this that would have been less creepy toward the end and I think that would have been good. The ending came about a bit abruptly with what felt like a non solution
