Runaways, Vol. 1: Find Your Way Home by Rainbow Rowell

I never thought I'd be able to love the Runaways as much as BKV's run but Rainbow Rowell makes the strongest attempt yet. Cutting through the upheavals and crossover events that left them scattered, she gathers up the heart of their tangled teenager angst and crafts a reunion that perfectly encapsulates the odd found family that made them a unique superhero team book when they first came out.

I will say this arc is a lot heavier on the interpersonal dynamics and playing catch up than BKV, who managed to make a perfect single issue with a hook and a greater arc. Rowell is content to lay the building blocks, leaving small hints and one big villain to deal with in the six issues, but the humor suits the characters and Anka's artwork is amazing at capturing all the nuances of facial features alongside the giant superhero splash pages. This is the best inheritor of the original run I could think of, just unique enough and different in the characters to really be a progression of their story rather than another attempt at capturing the initial magic.

SpoilerAnd any panel that could inspire a spin-off like this deserves to be read

This is a new continuation of an already existing graphic novel series. A bit hard for me to get into at first because I didn't know the background story, but I did enjoy the bits of humor thrown in.

Rainbow Rowell for the win! 🌈 The Runaways can be tricky to write in an effective, emotional way (as we saw with Whedon’s “meh” take on the group - and he’s otherwise one of my all time favs). Not to be outdone, Kris Anka’s art is spot on, beautiful, creative, and perfect for the Runaways. I love this emotional, teenage, tragic story and these deeply flawed but intensely honest characters. Lots of old themes revived here: first they physically ran away. This picks up after most of them emotionally ran away and are ignoring their current reality. Running away never really works. Friends help.

What fun! It's great to see the gang back together. I'll admit that the details were very fuzzy for me when I picked up this volume -- it's been a few years since I last read any Runaways. Rainbow Rowell's story filled in the blanks for me, with enough reminders of what came before without making it feel like a retread. Looking forward to more!

Just okay for me. I wanted to like it more. When I saw RR speak on a panel, she mentioned not needing to know anything about the comics and that this reboot could stand alone. While that is factually true, I felt left in the dark about a lot of things having never read the original comics and therefore failed to get invested in these characters.

So excited to see where this goes. Rowell more than does justice to these characters.

Many years ago, I read the first book or two in the Runaways series. It was well-done and enjoyable, but I never finished the series. In spite of that, I still enjoyed Rowell’s installment. She did a good job of letting the reader know what occurred before Find Your Way Home. Honestly, I’ll read anything that Rowell writes, so I look forward to more Runaways books from her. This book was colorful and action packed, and I liked the art as well. Very enjoyable!
