This book in the series introduces a town and the antagonist Nellie Oleson, along with brother Willie, Mr. and Mrs. Oleson, and the Reverend Alden. More of the same style of incidents and adventures for the Ingalls family and life for the Minnesotan white settlers.
While none of the Little House books will ever be my top picks, they're definitely comfort reads, this one most of all. I don't know why I connect with this particular one so strongly. I suppose I like the idea of living in what is essentially a hobbit hole, and I like the fact that they encounter a huge amount of adversity in this book, but deal with it all with a smile and a simple "all's well that ends well". It's reassuringly solid, one of those books that you can read when you're having a bad day, and slip back into the familiar story and feel comforted.

Alternate title: Everything Sucks On the Banks of Plum Creek.
This has been one of my favorite little house stories. They start out in a dugout and end up with a nice
little house. There are some dramatic parts with this one, with grasshoppers, blizzards, fires, etc. Reading about Nelly Oleson reminded me how much I disliked that character when I used to watch the tv shoeless.

The tension of the question of where Pa is is still so traumatising I was on the edge of my seat even though I knew how it ended // 3,75
