Oh my word, I loved this book. I even cried at the end. It's a story about the protagonist in a book and the characters who live inside it's pages, with her... and even can hide in independent clauses. The author does such an eloquent job of writing the characters and their struggles with breaking out of the molds they were written for (most never do). The plot has numerous twists as the protagonist becomes friends with the reader. This book is so original and creative and I even cried at the happy ending.

this has been my favorite book since i first read it when i was 8. it deals with grief in a way that is understandable for kids and even now when i re-read it at 22 it makes me emotional. i love this book, i can't say it enough.

I am not sure who recommended this to me, but I finally read it. I was excited about a new book concept. It did not move as quickly as I would have liked and several parts left me confused. Still, I really enjoyed the way it was crafted and will probably recommend it to others. It would make a good book club discussion book.

I loved the different perspective this book offers - her life and adventures as told from the point of view of a character inside a story!

I really enjoyed this little gem. It has a great premise and I think there are some deep themes to think about and discuss. You remember Shakespeare's play within a play? This is about a book within a book. Sylvie is the main character. She's the princess and heroine of her story. She manages to outlive her book and in the end does a Great Good Thing. I'm glad I didn't miss out on this one. I'll definitely read it again.

Honestly, I read this book so many times, so long ago, that I can't really remember all of the details and plot twists (that I KNOW are there!).... I just remember that it's good. And not just good, but great! Wonderful! AMAZING! So, I'm rating this five stars, and will re-visit it at a later date, just to verify all of its awesomeness!

Update: Re-read it. And YES! I LOVE this book!!!!!! So much! The creativity that was required to produce this tale is phenomenal. It was as if I could hear the author wondering what would happen if the characters could live and breathe and think on their own, beyond the words that were put into their mouths... Stunning. Incredible. Magical. I WILL be reading this to my kids (when I have them)!

My dad used to read to me every night when I was growing up and this book was the only one I loved so much that I made him immediately start from the top again as soon as we hit the last page. It's super sweet and full of heart and I know it's so hard to find now but it really is worth it if you can get your hands on it!!

A sweet little book about the magic of books--and what happens to the characters when you close the covers. A quick, charming read but nothing I'll return to.
