This sequel started off with a bang and ended with great promise, was filled with character drama and mystery, and plenty of romance. The magic and lore were expanded and led to some great moments as Han and Raisa took journeys to a magical school to learn and train and ultimately become even more embroiled in a conspiracy.

The characters continued to be interesting and developing well, with Raisa learning and growing from a base level. She's willing to work from the ground up and doesn't want to be excluded from anything that would make her weaker. Her relationship with Amon was a highlight for me and I hope to see how their interactions progress. The Bayars were surprisingly more complex than I imagined. Han kept being his sarcastic self, though sometimes I wondered if he was a little too aggressive. His own drama and personality clashed frequently with others, but I enjoy his chapters and am excited to see him continue to grow.

I felt like some of the romances were rushed, but I would like to see them explored more. My other major problem is that sometimes the descriptions of certain things or people or scenarios were a little too modern, and there were moments when it felt less fantasy and more high school drama. The middle also dragged on a lot in certain points, but it was all ultimately leading to an exciting place and makes me want to see where the rest of it goes!

For some reason, this was better the second time around. Raisa is less obnoxious in the second volume as her character continues developing. Also I feel like this is really Han-centric and he is so interesting of course.

I just really admire Chima's writing. It is tight, well-rounded, and still has the same impact that it did the first time I read it. Though her story isn't teeming with action, I still could not put this book down and finished the almost-600 page book very quickly considering its length.

On to book three!!!

The wait for the next will be torturous! I LOVE this series! I have the hugest literary crush on Han- his multifaceted personality and bad boy with a trick up his sleeve edge make him "dangerously irresistible" (Fiona's words, not mine though I totally agree). Raisa is a badass heroine who everyone seems to underestimate. And the two of them together is a fiery match. I'm looking forward to more romance between them in future books, and let's not forget the rest of the characters (I want to see more of Dancer and Cat!). The world of the Seven Realms books is incredible and alluring- I want to read more now!

Update -> 2nd reading ⭐⭐⭐⭐
