This is a great series. It reminds me a little of Whalen's The Thief series. The characters are really well done and there is a great balance of intrigue, frustration and revelation. I can't wait to get the next one from the library.

I very rarely like YA.

Even when I was a YA. I could never relate to the stupid ass choices, the tired ass love triangle trope, and the whole "I'm 16 and am going to lead veteran warriors into battle, disregarding all their wisdom and life learned strategic logic because I'M THE CHOSEN ONE!!!"

This has none of that and I love it. The main characters act their age. They kiss people, lots of people. They fall in and out of love with people. They make the best choices they can with the information available to them. They are learning as they go.

It's fantastic!

Not the best one so far. It took forever to get into the plot and it didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like the first one. Unfortunately not very memorable. Will probably be a little bit before I get into the next one.

This review contains spoilers for book number 1 in the series (The Demon King)!!

The first 200 pages were really slow, but I loved everything that came after that. As this book has almost 600 pages, there was a lot to enjoy!

The plot reminded me of one of my all-time favorites "The Name of the Wind" with Han being at a school for wizards, having confrontations with his nemesis there, studying hard and doing lots of extracurricular activities.

I loved the dynamic between Raisa and Han (when they finally met after 400 pages although the synopsis on the back of the book had already promised it). They also are both such great, complex and morally grey characters in themselves. Micah and Fiona Bayar stay very intersting side characters, my heart bleeds for Amon, Dancer is my little cinnamon roll and some interesting new characters were introduced.

This story has me really hooked and I have no idea how it'll go on after that explosive ending!!
