This book was slllllooooowwww. Usually I don’t mind it, but nothing really happened until towards the end. It was just getting to the school and then being at the school and learning. The magical school definitely reminded me of Harry Potter so that was fun. I do really love the characters and would like to see where the story goes from here. I also like whenever Raisa’s and Han’s storylines meet. I just didn’t like this book as much as the first one.

DID NOT FINISH

Try again another time. Stopped on chapter 14

I just really love the characters and the storyline. I especially love how Chima treats the female characters (there are both "queendoms" and "kingdoms" in this world). There are no easy answers for any of the characters. It's just incredibly well-written and interesting! I can't wait to read the third book!

Entertaining and fun, but pacing felt a bit too fast. I wanted there to be more interplay and rumination on people’s choices and some more time for relationships to develop and gain traction. I did like that it didn’t try to age up a lot of the ways the character interacted and also kept the dialogue light. Nice and readable.

This is the ultimate in between book. That was no kind of ending. That was like the ending to Back to the Future.

I have mixed feelings about this series. There are points where I really like it and points where I'm like, "Meh." I like the characters, and I'm all about Raisa and and Han, I'm just saying.

I'll definitely continue the series but it's not shaping up to be a favorite or anything.

3.5. Some of the characters and tropes really irritate me but I have to know what happens next. So I guess that’s a good thing?

2016 review:

This series just continues to blow me away. I loved the first book when I read it early last year, and I wish I had picked this up sooner, but better late than never. When I finally got back into it, it was like I never left the world.

The writing is great, the plot is super interesting, and I love the characters. And there is so much diversity! The world building is so intricate and well thought out. I'm so impressed, especially after the last fantasy I book was just an epic fail in my opinion.

All in all I'm just glad fantasy books like these exists to give the fantasy genre a good name, and I don't plan on waiting another 2 years to pick up book 3.
