3.5. Some of the characters and tropes really irritate me but I have to know what happens next. So I guess that’s a good thing?

2016 review:

This series just continues to blow me away. I loved the first book when I read it early last year, and I wish I had picked this up sooner, but better late than never. When I finally got back into it, it was like I never left the world.

The writing is great, the plot is super interesting, and I love the characters. And there is so much diversity! The world building is so intricate and well thought out. I'm so impressed, especially after the last fantasy I book was just an epic fail in my opinion.

All in all I'm just glad fantasy books like these exists to give the fantasy genre a good name, and I don't plan on waiting another 2 years to pick up book 3.

Excellent! Most excellent! If you enjoyed The Demon King, you will most definitely enjoy The Exiled Queen! (The spoiler-y stuff for the Demon King has been removed.)

Princess Raisa ana'Marianna
Spoilerhas just barely escaped the forbidden matrimony with Micah Bayar and
is hoping to find protection within the walls of Oden's Ford, the best school in the seven realms for soldiers and wizards. At the same time, Han Alister
Spoiler, last surviving heir (outside of the royal family) to Alger Waterlow, the Demon King,
is on his way to Oden's Ford with Dancer to study wizardry. Both Raisa, once again disguised as Rebecca Morley, and Han must survive the dangerous journey from the fells to Oden's Ford. Once there, Raisa is separated from Mystwerk, the wizard's side of campus, by a river.
SpoilerThis river is the only barrier from being discovered by Micah Bayar.
Han's second chance at life is hindered when he runs into Micah at Oden's Ford and learns that he shares both a dormitory and all of his classes with him. When Micah keeps making subtle but deadly attempts on Han's life, he has to learn to fight back, not as Cuffs as he is accustomed, but as Han Allister; Han has to learn how to fight by the bluebloods' rules.

This book is fantastic and ends with the wickedest cliffhanger. September can't get here soon enough!

Totally loving this series. I can't wait to see where it goes.

4 Stars!

I enjoyed The Exiled Queen a lot more than the first book in this series and am really happy I decided to continue it.
I always find myself enjoying school settings in fantasy books (Harry Potter, Nevernight, etc.) and that may just be because my school years sucked growing up, or because of how cool it sounds in general to go to such a badass sounding school. With that said, I also found it kind of odd that everyone decided to head to school while so much was going on in the background.

I couldn't understand how characters who are literally on the run would attend a popular school, and all end up together at the same time. In addition, one person in the book was running from another character who was knowingly going to that school as well, soooooo I don't know why that was such a good idea (it wasn't).
Despite that, I felt the romances were fun (I ship Han with you know who SO much<3) and I really enjoyed the writing. Super excited to continue forward in this series.

I expected a lot more from this book, in Han's side we have growth and what looks to be the villain origin story, and on Rasa we have....... a Mary Su.... a still boy crazy Mary Su. Basically I couldn't stand Rasa's parts and Han's, though interesting felt like it was so sped up. This was supposed to be the schooling arc and instead we got more about them getting to school then actual classes and that lot.

Wow, this one was incredible. If you enjoy the off-limits romance, secret identity, boarding schools, and impending war plotlines, this one is for you!

While the plot is beautifully tied up at the end, the excitement for the next book is at a peak. I cannot wait to break into the next one! This fantasy series just keeps getting better and better.
