It's a parable of Mother Nature and man. For a more interpersonal reading, consider stripping the genders of the characters because selflessness and selfishness is gender free.

This is the saddest book and it made me cry as a child.

I always really liked this book. I found it sad, but I enjoyed it. And then I was turned to the dark side, somewhere around the time my youngest child learned to read and found reviews of it on the internet and now, I see why people think it's horrible, but I still enjoy the book. I'm not sure I will read it to my eventual grandkids though.

This was an interesting, but sad story, about the interaction of a man and a tree.
This shows the ability of the tree to love by giving of herself, and a refuge for the boy to come to an environment he knows where he is loved. The tree provides for the various needs of the boy. These include, eating and selling her apples, taking and making crowns with her leaves, swinging from her branches, and using her trunk and branches to build his house and boat. In the end, all she has to offer is a stump to sit on when the boy becomes old and tired.
This is a sad, but at the same time a heart-warming story of the interaction between a boy and his favorite tree.
A story of between love and giving. Well worth a read. – Bob H.
