I read this classic of children's literature for the first time at 23, and was filled with rage/disgust by the relationship between the boy and the tree. SAY NO ALREADY, TREE, SAY NO! HE DOESN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT IT MEANS TO LOVE YOU!

And 10 months later...

...oh GOD, IT'S ABOUT MOMS.

I like the story but wish there was a consequence to the selfishness of the boy. I expected a lesson as I turned every page but was disappointed to see that there was no negative consequence to the selfishness of the boy.

This was one of the saddest and deepest books I have ever read. I almost cried at the end! Everyone should read this book from 7 year olds to people who are 80!

I remember exploring this book once again when I was a student in college. We had to explore if it was an appropriate children's book and what some of the underlying themes of the book were. Great book!
