Yes, let’s romanticize and normalize teaching children to ignore everything and let the people they love use and abuse them until they are just a tree stump. Nope. I’ve hated this book since childhood and I still feel this way now. I do like the illustrations though.
Disappointing. And I love Shel Silverstein's poetry. But this book had no growth of the boy in it. He didn't seem to learn anything. All he did was take from the tree. And the tree gave and gave. What is the message? To give and give until you disappear? To take and take until the giver dies? And does it disturb anyone that the taker is male and the giver is female?
CRY CRY CRY.
This is a story of unconditional love and not expecting anything in return.
I break down every time I read this. I say I won't, but I still do. I think you have to be somewhat of a grown up to cry because you see the story differently than a child would.

This story taught me that you can give some people everything you have and they don't really appreciate you for it. This fucking tree deserved more, tbh.
One of the most amazing books of all time. And I rest firmly on the The-ending-is-sad side of the debate.
I've heard other stories that are similar to this one, but I still like it. To me, it's kind of like parents-children relationship :')
