Stop giving until it hurts. Let's not romanticise doing this. Set boundaries!
This is a children's classic that everyone should read.
The reason I'm giving this one 5 stars is because I have a strong emotional attachment to it. This was one of my favourite books as a child and I can't rationalize the reasons behind me having such a strong emotional bond to this story.
However, if I were to rate this considering the story, I'm afraid the rating would be much, much lower. This story is quite twisted, if you think of it. It all revolves around a selfish kid and a doormat of a tree that keeps giving everything, literally everything it has to the boy throughout their lives. This story reeks of patriarchy and entitlement.
It is all very sentimental and tries to make you believe that this is a true love story when really there is no love in it. There is co-dependence. From the boy that depends on the tree in specific moments of his life to attain the things he wants, from the tree whose existence revolves around this child and their happiness, regardless of her own self preservation.
Not the best message for kids. You don't have to put your own dignity and self-respect behind someone else's interests in order to love them, this is what you want to teach your children and this book just transmits the opposite idea.
All that said, 5 stars. I love it.
