I read The Metamorphosis for the first time when I was in high school. I remember thinking Kafka really missed an opportunity to write a great horror novel. “–Man turns to insect! gross!” My, my how time can change a person.

This is Gregor Samsa’s story. On page 1 he wakes up in his bed to find himself transformed into a large insect. He looks at his gross segmented body and thin little legs and the first thing he thinks about is that he is definitely going to be late for work. The next few pages depict him trying to roll over, an act that is considerable more difficult now that he’s an insect.

This is a novel about isolation and the meaning of what it means to be human. Who went through the metamorphosis? Gregor? Not really, he starts out as an insect, he stays an insect. His sister? his family? Is it about BECOMING or about BEING?

I enjoyed this, I read it fast, I read it twice, I think about it when I’m not reading it… but I can’t give it a GREAT rating. It’s a simple story. There is a lot to talk about, but not enough to teach it.

Somewhere in the corner of my subconscious lies this collection

Truly magnificent and utterly seminal! Wonderful is the metamorphosis and yet more wonderful is the other simpler smaller one page stories.

Do u ever feel

Liked the book. Got it to relive the metamorphosis, but it was still worthwhile to read all of it. It's very gripping in it's, absurdity(?). Kafka manages to capture the ways I feel the world operates. The silly and arbitrary nature of how things work. We can want and we can plan and we can pray, at the end of the day, *something* is gonna happen. A lot of our fate is luck.
