Smart and strong girl, protecting her Indigenous community against bad medicines. I loved the descriptions of her visions, intuition, and grounding. I loved the love of culture, and how sacred the elders are treated. Been waiting a long time for a great read like this.

Excellent. It led me along and knew exactly how to manipulate me as a reader, then use that to show me something valuable.
4.5⭐️
This was such an interesting and overall very good YA mystery thriller! Its filled with culture, tradition, beautiful language and storytelling makes it a beautiful experience to read. Although there isn't really a lot of character development I think its fine in this book because there is so much else going on and it centers more about previous experiences she's had (before the book started) and during the story. The story is really about doing the right thing but at the same time making hard choices and working through her grief. I loved her relationship with her family which was really beautifully made, especially when they came and gave her a helping hand when needed. Two smaller aspects mentioned in the book that I really enjoyed was the music, it was old school and exactly what I personally listen to so love that! For example songs like hey ya and dont stop believing. Also that they were talking openly about periods lol
If you're an experienced YA mystery reader and want more fast paced books this might not be it for you because it can be slow at times, I am one of the people that prefer fast paced books.
TW: grief, suicide, murder, violence, death, drugs (addiction, creating & using), on page sexual assault, kidnapping, and racism
got the Swedish version of this sent from the publisher!

I see why this was the Goodread YA Fiction winner of 2021. This was really good. Loved learning about Native American traditions and norms. Very suspenseful and some good surprises. Sadly I think there is a lot of reality in this story.

I love Daunis!! I feel like I know her. I love her quirks and brains and love!! This book is the perfect mix of everything! Mystery, romance, thriller, growing up, identity searching, community, cultural snapshot.. the complexities of the culture, the beauties and the stigmas and the struggles and injustices were captured so well. And the complexities of girlhood!! When she “died” I freaked!! Also I wish she got with Jamie or we at least saw how that played out in post even though I know it was more about her discovering and building her own identity and self confidence after her trials.. Also I love how I feel more connected to the Anishinaabe people now.. I wonder if I can get my family in Wisconsin who live near and with Potawatomi members to read this and pay attention.. also the generational themes and the community .. I feel like Levi did what he did bc he didn’t have the sense of community Daunis did. And I felt like she really was a foil to him because she cared so much about her people, her community through family and through the tribe. this book was just so well written and I really do recommend to anyone!!

When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t sure it was going to be my style—but I stuck with it. The pacing felt slow at times, and the book seemed quite long without a lot of major events happening throughout. That said, as I look back on it, I can see that the focus was more on immersing the reader in the native culture, their traditions, and ceremonies, which ended up being both informative and meaningful. It wasn’t a plot-heavy book, but more of an experience. I really appreciated the ending—it felt grounded and realistic, even for a work of fiction. Overall, while it wasn’t quite what I usually go for, I’m glad I gave it a chance.
