4.4 AVERAGE

At first, I struggled with this book and the amount of trauma the main character endures, but after reading the author's note and realizing the bigger picture of what this represents in terms of the Indigenous Community and violence towards women. It was insightful, thought-provoking, and presented real issues by fantastically engaging the reader's empathy. I loved learning a bit about the Anishinaabe and really could feel myself in the shoes of Daunis. I will say that I did have a bit of whiplash for the ups and downs of YA romance, and it took me a while to get into the YA setup of the story, but I don't think that should detract from the importance of this book. I am excited to see the impact this book will have, eager to see more from Angeline Boulley, and I hope that we will continue to see better representation in the fiction world.

I did enjoy this book a lot but there were times that I felt we lost the storyline and went on different adventures that didn't do anything for the plot. I liked the pace during the first 150-200 pages but up until the last 100 pages it took a bit of a nosedive. The end did wrap it up nicely.
