4.25 ⭐️ started a little slow for me but picked up about half way for me. Feel like some of the cultural parts could have been more spaced out in the book.. . But loved this story !

“Books are good medicine!”

I’ve been wanting to read this YA novel ever since it came out in March, and I finally treated myself to a copy at Bookshop Santa Cruz’s anniversary sale. Like the author, Daunis Fontaine is caught between the worlds of her Native father and white mother, but even though she feels like an outsider in both, she knows them intimately, and this makes her a great narrator. I learned a lot about contemporary Ojibwe culture, and as a bonus the intricate, constantly surprising plot about a meth epidemic made for a suspenseful read, but what really stood out for me was the deep spirituality that is a fundamental part of Daunis’s life in ways both matter-of-fact and profound. This was a perfect way to celebrate Native American Heritage Month!

This was a book that left me with an insufficient respect for tomorrow. I could not put it down. Daunis is an incredible voice. The pervasive presence of Daunis' identity as a native woman, a member of a vibrant community, and an outsider who moves between social spheres/worlds is consistent and compelling. Somehow this is a spy thriller that feels deeply tragic, touchingly human, and subtly hopeful.
