Was a great read and gives good insight into more traditional native American ways.
I personally loved all the native language and learning more about people living in a limbo between being native american while also living off the reservation and how that affects them.
I do hope to read more about this author.

I both read this in print and audio, and I enjoyed the audio better overall. It was very cool to actually hear the Native American language which is used frequently throughout. I like how this book really went into the culture and customs and history of the Native American tribes it dealt with. I feel like I learned a lot. It did have a slow start for me but the second half of the book was worth it.

🌿 Very informative. So many new things I knew about indigenous community.
🌿 So many powerful woman's characters. I love it.
🌿 The plot twist and the suspense is not quite there for me.
🌿 So many characters. So hard for me keep up.
🌿 The love story is just there like pinch of salt in it but I kinda like it.

The cover on this book is amazing! So so beautiful! Went in blindly with this one (because of the cover art) and ended up enjoying it more than I thought I would! It definitely reads like a young adult book, in its style and grammar, but overall kept my interest. I enjoyed learning more about Native communities and their cultures also.

I went back and forth on how I would rate this one, but in the end, as a whole I did like it. And I definitely think teenage me would have loved it, so for its intended audience I would highly recommend it. I did feel that the pacing was a bit off and it probably could have been edited down a bit. YA has a tendency, I think, to try to cover way too much ground in one book, which felt like what happened here. There were certain threads and storylines that I think could have been more effective if given more attention and nuance, rather than being used as a mere plot device to get from one part of the story to the next, but that may not bother other readers like it does me. Truly, the ending was so poignant that for me it brought the rating up a whole star, it was beautifully done. I am still looking forward to reading Warrior Girl Unearthed and would recommend this book to any young adults looking for a good book.
Hearing that this is a thriller gave me pause (thriller/horror is my absolute least favourite genre… I just can’t do it) but I’m glad I picked it up anyway! This did not feel like a thriller in the traditional sense and read more like a heart-wrenching history lesson laced in fiction. I learned so much about Indigenous culture through reading this and if my heart could cry, it would be weeping for Daunis.
This intensity of this book (CW: abuse, addiction, sexual assault) coupled with the dynamic characters, relationships, and shared knowledge made for a read that engrosses the reader and wraps up with an ending that I’m a bit speechless about!
Thrillers are never gonna be my jam but this particular one will always have a place on my bookshelf. 4/5

DNF around 76%. I just couldn’t handle the sexual assault part. I don’t know what it was specifically that got to me so much with this book, because I’ve read other books with similar themes, but this was just like a gut punch. I just don’t feel like I want to put myself through finishing the story and watching Daunis deal with what happened. I know this story is important and has won awards and I feel really bad not finishing but it’s just not for me right now.
