I loved learning about the Ojibwe culture in this book. The romance was really good, too. The overall “mystery” was subpar.

This was a long overdue read and, damn, I’m going to be haunted by this one for awhile. It’s a book about a very particular place & culture & time period but so much of it is tragically universal. I couldn’t give it 5 stars because I wanted a HEA for Daunis sooo bad, and while I can see the argument that the TRUER version is better than the fairytale,  I still prefer the fantasy.

“We aren’t responsible for their choices. We love imperfect people. We can love them and not condone their actions and beliefs.”

An incredible book. I couldn’t put it down.

Started this as a buddy read with my ojibwe friend and it kinda got away from us...

Because this book was amazing. It was so gripping that neither of us could help but devour it. And it was a very emotional read as well, I shed many many tears reading this. I really liked Duanis as a protagonist. She felt very real and stayed true to herself while she sleuthed out the mystery happening within her tribe. The author likened it to Nancy Drew which I felt was a fair comparison. I went into this book blind and I loved every twist and turn along the way. Aspects of the mystery were obvious but I still felt the pay off was satisfactory.

It was just a great read overall and I wholly encourage anyone who is even a little curious about this to check it out though I will add a content warning, there will be a scene of sexual assualt / rape within this book. I think it's important to be aware about this. It is handled realistically and, as the author says, is a very real danger that a large percentage of Native American women face in their daily lives.

YA brilliance! I’m glad I finally got around to this one after reading Warrior Girl Unearthed for work. I also got to see Angelline Boulley speak a few weeks ago. I am so glad she is sharing these stories!
