I shouldn't rate this book because I didn't technically finish it but also this is getting too much praise. I got 80% through. And I'm fucking done. It was one thing for it to be like meandering and confusing because the author doesn't write in like chronological order. It's like our main character is doing something and then she's about to go do something else and then it flashes forward and then she reflects on the things she was about to go do and it's like where the fuck are we even in this story?
But then check your trigger warnings because she is raped and when she tells her FBI boyfriend about it, he scolds her for going limp and for putting herself in a compromising situation. are you fucking kidding me?! So I looked at the end and everybody sucks her best friend's ex-boyfriend shoots her, her old hockey coach is part of the the drug ring, The boy who assaulted her (not the rape that was different!!!) Is also in the drug ring along with her brother!!!! every single man in this story is such a fucking letdown. Good luck to everybody. I'm fucking done with this book and I'm claiming it is being finished so I can knock this stupid fucking category off the 52 book challenge and I got far enough and I suffered and God damn it I earned it
But then check your trigger warnings because she is

This was wild. So many emotions, so much culture, so many UP references! I thoroughly enjoyed this & it also broke my heart.
Once the investigation plot line started in full force about 20% into the book, I was HOOKED. Daunis felt so relatable to me. Incredible character development, a gripping plot, and the world-building of Sault St. Marie and Sugar Island combined to make one of my favorite books of the year so far. I cannot recommend this read enough!!

Very strong native voice character driven novel that becomes a whodunit. This was the writer’s first novel and many themes were introduced that were not followed up on but may be in sequels.
