4.4 AVERAGE

I struggled a little bit with this one in the beginning because my attention span got lost on the many characters but once I got into it I could not put it down and I can't stop thinking about it even after I have finished it. Definitely a MUST read if you're a non-indigenous reader trying to diversify your reading list because the heart and soul of Daunis's culture is so vivid you will feel it viscerally. I loved it.

loved this book! super addictive and fast paced from the start!! i loved the way that i could follow the story but it wasn’t super predictable and it still kept me guessing! the last 100 pages felt like a hurricane. love love love this book!!!!

Informative without being preachy. Thrills and mystery with characters worth caring about, for the most part.

Once I started this book, I could not put it down. It was engaging and pulled me through by the heartstrings in the best way possible. I really loved learning about the Ojibwe tribe of Sault Ste. Marie and Daunis’ love for her town and her culture was infectious. Mix that in with a mystery surrounding absolutely real issues facing many indigenous people and tribes and you have handed me a great combination for a favorite book.
It was a solid five stars up until the end when things got only partially resolved and I am done with the book but feeling really dissatisfied and like so much was actually left unanswered.
And guys, it’s YA and there’s a romance, and I didn’t hate either of those things. In fact, I was obsessed with the romance. It’s extremely rare for me, and not because I don’t like romance, I actually really do. I just don’t think most people who write romance write it the way I want to read it. The way it was handled in this book was absolutely perfect. Up until the last 10% when it was not, and actually is a really big reason for my rating not being a full five stars.
The disappointment is overwhelming.
