“Firekeeper’s Daughter” is a breathtaking work of fiction, weaving elements of contemporary and traditional Anishinaabe culture into a compelling mystery-thriller with a truly unique voice. This is a heavy read, but I loved being in Daunis Fontaine’s head, witnessing her struggles as a biracial unenrolled tribal member living in American Sault Ste Marie, and seeing how she balanced both sides of her family with all of the scandal and trauma of her past and present. The statistics of abuse experienced by Indigenous women are staggering, and this book lays bare the systemic sociopolitical issues that fester into the sort of violence and tragedy that plagues these tight-knit communities. Boulley’s writing is by turns sharp, fluid, organic, and poetic, and it felt as easy as breathing to fall into the fast-paced plot. While the many shocking and heartbreaking moments could become at times overwhelming, there were also so many small acts of resilience, love, and healing. Time and time again, I was blown away by the strength of the protagonist, and I won’t soon forget her story.
