imagine sitting down and writing your first book and it's this. lots of little inklings of what was to come with Skin, i definitely think of them as like cousins in a way. bitter but juicy and blow-torched by unbelievable prose. horror is plagued by mediocre-to-unreadable writing and it boils my blood when i see people group kathe in with "splatterpunk" writers like fucking jack ketchum?? or wrath james white??? like are y'all actually that stupid or are you just trying to make me personally upset? in my head the funhole adds :3 every time it says 'love you'
Was dragging on too long. Didn't manage to grab my interest
Cipher, in the context of this book, may infer the following: a zero; a figure 0. a person of no importance, especially one who does the bidding of others and seems to have no will of their own.
Failed poet and video store clerk Nicholas still loves Nakota deeply. Nakota is aware of this fact although she is just too selfish to have any meaningful relationship with him. Nakota is abusive and harsh. But Nicholas is equally pathetic and full of self loathing. He lives in a small flat in an apartment with sparse furniture, with no ambition for self improvement.
One night after a drunken party the two stumble upon the storeroom on the floor below Nicholas's flat, and inside they find a hole on the floor. A hole that goes nowhere but seemingly into an abyss made of fetid flesh. Nakota becomes obsessed with this "funhole" and starts to put things inside it, bound by strings. The objects come back changed, transformed. But soon Nick's body will be marked, and his soul infected, by the hole.
I had not the time to read it regularly, but I keep coming back to it, much alike the obsessed protagonist of the book. The prose in this book is unconventional, fluid, and sometimes poetic. The horror is hard to decipher, which gives it a dreamlike quality. There are elements similar the Ring and House of Leaves, but it is completely original in its depiction of squalor and self-destruction. Grunge horror that has the same vibe as a NIN song. It could have benefited from another run of editing. It definitely tested my patience at times where I wanted something interesting to happen. But I will be thinking about this book for sometime.

Beautiful prose and a striking idea open to interpretation…maybe a bit too open? Very introspective.
