an intelligent compression of allegory and auto-fiction - a genre blending narrative that pushes the boundaries of a conventional novel

Incredible. It’s short so I thought it would be quick but it is challenging and I found it a bit slower than other literary fiction.

It’s written quite beautifully and the characters are rendered with great love. However, it may not be for everyone. There’s not much of a plot and some parts speak frankly about abuse and sexual exploitation. The story is told in an episodic way, with flashbacks and stylized narrative devices. I can see how it could be hard to follow but if you have some experience reading non-traditional or experimental literature, you won’t find it to be a problem.

Highly recommended for a reader interested in the subject matter and ready for a challenging and somewhat slow narrative style.

I hate giving this book such a low rating because I want to commend it for giving a space to queer and Latinx voices. Truly I just don’t think this book was written in a style meant for me. It was difficult for me to follow and some of the scenes of abuse were hard to read. I think I just didn’t entirely know what the book was going to entail when I started it. I think I would have thoroughly enjoyed this book if I read it alongside other queer individuals but sitting and processing it on my own proved difficult. Not my typical read but glad I read it!
