I enjoyed this unique fantasy premise, the concise world building (within one standalone book), and the mystery plot with political intrigue subtext.

This was very close to being a perfect book for me, but knocking a star off for the random “pregnancy and birth” chapter at the end. It wasn’t completely out of place, but the fact that the entire denouement was centered around it felt weird after so many beautiful chapters about these incredible characters.

Overall did not like. The POVs coming together 85% thru the book. The romance part was not necessary to the story. The whole did it was super obvious. Not the writer for me.
