Come idea è buona, forse portata troppo all'estremo.

One of the best comic stories I've read thus far. Fantastically drawn and coloured, well written, and a plot that grips you right to the end. The lack of thought bubbles and sound effects only draws the reader deeper into the story, relying on what is said and seen as its driver. It's great to see another comic 'hero' who does not have superpowers and achieves their aims like the rest of us mere mortals. I'm in a fortunate position of not having seen the movie which may have clouded many other's perceptions of the story but from my end V for Vendetta is well worth picking up.

I really like it. I think there is an automatic disconnect between me and the story because I am from the United States and the story takes place in Britain (so we are working with completely different histories and perspectives) but it doesn't matter very much. I don't need to know the history, the backing, etc. of what is going on to understand because the feeling of it is done incredibly well. I like the refusal to mince words and the over-reliance on theater and literature to make points (as it meshes incredibly well with the characters they have built).
The issue I have is that there are a few unneeded rape scenes which, although do serve a good point, are not done in the best way. Rape scenes in texts (movies, comics, literature) when done by AMAB/male writers is always iffy. Rape is usually used as a signal to highlight how "messed up" things have gotten. In this, specifically, it is that the police are able to rape someone as part of their repertoire of punishments. The issue, of course, arises when we discuss real experiences, that rape done by police officers is quite common, that rape is a consistent worry for non-men. It is not particularly safe for non-men to walk down the street alone at any time, and trying to portray rape as being something off in the future to show how bad it's gotten, rings false when we face this fact.
I will say, though: usually an unneeded rape scene will change my opinion greatly. The rest of this series is absolutely beautiful. It is a masterpiece. The movie is a masterpiece. The dialogue, the artwork, even the lettering, is beautiful. I cannot recommend it enough.

“I didn't put you in a prison, Evey. I just showed you the bars.”

I watched the movie first, I loved it - I knew I would love the novel too and yet it amazed me. It answers Orwell's 1984 question; the way Lion King's Hakuna-matata answered Hamlet's 'To be or not to be'. Alan Moore assures us worst of governments can be broken by a single man believing in a single idea. The prose is simply beautiful - I felt like hugging every word uttered in it, specially in Valerie's letter:

"“But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you. I love you. With all my heart, I love you.”

I'm going to quote it a lot for rest of my life.

Pacifism gets the hardest hit; the fact that V is seen as a terrorist goes on to show that. V creates an anarchy like situation and dies. Moore won't tell you what kind of government is better but simply that one must not give in to a order full of injustice; and that such order should definitely be broken. It shall result in Anarchy but that is not necessarily a problem. Anarchy always result in new order; to be retained if good and to be destroyed again if found unjust.

And, of course hats off to David Lloyd for illustrations.

Alan Moore has said that he was in a bad mood during the Eighties. I think he simply lived during an awful time. No matter how her memory is being whitewashed these days, don't forget that Margaret Thatcher wanted to do things like sterilize homosexuals and put them in camps. V for Vendetta is darkly beautiful. It is also intelligent and the film absolutely missed the point of the book.
