What the hell was that ending?!! It just came out of the blue! I am crying...but why?!

This book was surprisingly good. I was expecting typical victorian nothing-actually-happens approach but there was definitely elements of the sensational novel about it.

The characters are mostly likable, or at least, pitiable. I love the feminism instilled throughout, and the social satire. The love scenes are actually well executed, not just the usual in-passing proposals that tended to be written in that era.

I was as torn as Maggie was a lot of the time, and that is a sign of a well written book.

Unexpectedly likable. Sad but not depressing. The ending I didn't really like as it seemed to be rushed and didn't really fit....but it was moving and written excellently. Another underrated female author!

This book has made me depressed. I am depressed now. I don't know if I can continue life. I need a minute to process this.

Really loved this. Big Eliot fan. Probably not as good as Middlemarch though. Wasn’t sure what I thought of this book until I read the last few chapters, soaked in my own tears. Oh, Philip...

Set in a small town and surrounding countryside in pre-industrial England the story features the lives of one upper working class/lower middle class miller and his family. Their good fortunes and calamities are played out before a society made up almost entirely of 'social Christians' who have no understanding of or inclination towards forgiveness and service.

The Tulliver family and their relations are a fascinating subject. Such brilliant writing. It took me a while to adjust to this earlier form of English but once I got into it it was a real page turner!

I loved it.
