I really enjoyed this book. It kept me guessing all the way through. I was proven wrong whenever I thought I knew what was going to happen.
I understand why the first half was needed, but it was kind of a drudge. Then I really enjoyed the weird budding relationship. Then "who's the bad guy" kept changing so fast I was confused. And for as many times as Shiori said "demons take me," she should not have been surprised to be taken by a demon. I'm glad the empress was redeemed in the end. The magic system was weird, but I liked the idea of dragon pearls being a source. Takan sounds amazing. Kiki is super annoying (even more so in the audio book narration). It was overall okay and I have to read the 2nd book to see if Shiori and Takan ever meet again.
