1. What are we dealing with?
2. Wanting run amok
3. Regaining control

Wow. This was a crazy read. I don’t even know where to start tbh. It’s like 60% science 40% self help, but it’s a really good read regardless of how you watch porn, whether you’re addicted, watch it intermittently, or never watch it. It also talks a lot about addiction as a whole and why our brains do dat.
Honestly recommend to anyone, it feels increasingly important as the world becomes more and more digital. I’m sure any republican would have an aneurysm if this book was in highschools, but I think teens could benefit from reading chapter 2 as a standalone read because of how the whole chapter is just focused on the science of addiction, porn addiction, and how both affect your brain and life.

Certainly an interesting read and a really shocking one at that. Only the writing style was not necessarily for me and sometimes a bit difficult to relate to.

3.5, good book but idk the advice felt kinda generic, but hey, the good part is the advice works for any addiction you’re tryna stop. I think the book does a good job of using of conveying all current findings on how to battle addiction but it feels like there’s something missing. I don’t know what, but it feels a bit incomplete.

°The Book in 3 Sentences

1. Discover how and what the world of pornography generates in those who use it;

2. How to overcome a disorder associated with pornography and small tips even for those who simply want to get away from it;

3. A great intention in wanting to change the fate of those who unfortunately came out hurting, through not only knowledge, as the author said: "This is a theme of this book: we need to listen to today's users and their peers because the phenomenon is moving so fast".

°Who should read it?

The book treats the topics in two distinct but intertwined ways. Describing the effects that pornography has caused to many users, it juxtaposes studies and scientific researches to make true the theses analyzed and give also a medical-scientific explanation.

After these considerations I believe that the book can be read by:

- anyone who is interested in the topic and also wants to have some scientific explanation about it...;

- anyone who has had contact with the pornographic world or still use it;

- anyone of any age, especially adolescents, who do not know the risks associated with this world, to educate and make them aware;

- anyone interested in a medical-scientific view of this topic. However, as mentioned before, the book does not delve into all the medical aspects, so if you are looking for a book oriented to a more scientific view, I recommend something else.

°My top 3 Quotes

1. When you remove a source of pleasure from the brain, it is like taking away the leg of a table. The whole thing becomes rocky and unstable. The brain has two option: one, to make you hurt like hell in every way it can think of to "encourage" you to put the table leg back again, or two, to accept that the table leg is really gone, and figure out how to re-balance without it. Of course, it tries Option One first. Then, after a while, it gets to work on Option Two, all while still pushing Option One. Eventually, it seems like the brain re-balances, giving up on Option One, and fully succeeding at Option Two.

2. The fact is, the brain's reward centre doesn't know what porn is. It only registers levels of stimulation through dopamine spikes.

3. I will never get enough of what doesn't satisfy me and it never, ever satisfies me.

°Summary

The book is divided into an introduction, 3 chapters and a final chapter containing reflections by the author himself.

The first chapter is a preamble and an appetizer of the second chapter. In the first one are presented experiences, symptoms and confessions of users of the site "your brain on porn" (belonging to the author) and others of his wife.
This first chapter gives us a first taste of what could be the consequences of the use of online pornography.

The second chapter is the more "scientific" one, where the author exposes some theses supported by research and confessions of users.
He explains what happens in our brain and what are the consequences.

In the third chapter there are a series of tips recommended by users and by the author to be able to detach and eliminate porn from your life.

The last chapter are some considerations stipulated by the author, with several food for thought.
One in particular I found very surprising, the author compares the use of cigarettes in the 20th century with the use of porn in our days.
In both cases, the consequences of their use were unknown and now as never before, we should benefit from what we failed to do before.

I hope this review may have helped you and remember:

You're not alone.
