I felt at times that this book had potential and was headed in the right direction and then it just fell flat.
'A Kiss of Iron' by Clare Sager is the first book in the Shadows of the Tenebris Court series. Married but abandoned Kat has been doing what she can to keep her holdings afloat. She is barely managing to get by that is until debt collectors come to take her home because her absentee husband has leveraged the land. Not sure what to do Kat thinks it's finally some good luck when the Spy Master of the Court brings her in with a specialized task promising to pay her enough to save her home. The task she is entrusted with is spying on the Night Queen's Shadow. As she fumbles along Kat finds herself lost in the intrigues of court and her growing feelings for her target. But quitting is not an option.
spoilers
I liked the initial actions of Kat being the Wicked Lady and stealing what she could in order to supplement the holdings income. It made Kat seem more knowledgable than she turned out to be, it made her seem more capable and more of a go getter. She was backed in a corner and she was doing what she could and she seemed like a decent person despite you know being a highway robber.
When she gets to court, I get being blind sided and suddenly feeling like the ground is gone from beneath you and feeling like there are no options. But she seemed like a way more meeker and stilted character than she was before. I feel like the Wicked Lady would have pushed back, asked more questions, been more forth coming with Bastion, wouldn't have been so subservient to the Spy Master. It felt like a lot of back tracking on character growth. I liked the insight into her character with her uncle. I would hate to say that I liked that whole thing cause it feels like a horrible thing to like and be happy happened even to a fictional character but I felt it was eye opening to her character and it brought a lot full circle. Near the end it seemed like her character went even further backward and got less empowered and less likeable.
There were parts of this book that I felt were just not my cup of tea and maybe I felt too immature, take them giggling and making fun of her not understanding that the gardener Mathew was into her and asking to come to her room. Then the rose book stuff when she goes to sell it, why didnt they just have it all out and have an open and honest conversation? I guess im just tired of people professing their undying love for people saying they'll do anything for them just not be honest and tell them the truth about stuff that sometimes doesn't even impact them. That plus cheesy bits that make me roll my eyes in a very not good way. Then when you add how the second half felt dragged out and Kat's character feels like it's going downhill. Great spice couldnt save this book and the spice was okay but not book carrying. I also felt the whole scene with the poison and the cups at the wedding was incredibly annoying.
Anyways I will not be continuing on with this series.
