Bad storytelling, fmc doesn't actually have any agency or does anything to affect the direction of the plot other than (barely) react to others. Mmc is madly in love ready to give up the world for her after meeting twice, without any explanation of where his feelings come from or any gradual build. No real connection between the couple, just empty words and sex.

genuinely checked 3 times if i was reading the right book, considering the star rating
DNF chap 55/82 after skimming basically the entire way. neither the writing style nor the world building did anything to immerse me in the story (city of Lunden? neighboring kingdom of Frankia where they speak Frankish aka just French? Groundbreaking.), and I didn't really find myself rooting for the fmc or caring much about her at all.

it was a really good story but something was missing and i just can put my finger on it. I think there is a lot of stuff the author threw in without explaining especially the magic system. It kind of made me feel a little disconnected from the story but there was the right amount of tension and romance & the story has a really good baseline. Hopefully book 2 make up for it.
