dnfing an hour into the audiobook for no fault of the author's, I am just having a really hard, triggering time listening to how wonderful her mom was and how she grew up with a community. Really glad she had a mom and found family who supported her but my own trauma is making this difficult to listen to and I sat in the car and cried for a while.

While I found it interesting to learn more about Kamala's character and trajectory leading her to become the new vice-president of the US, this book fell flat. It is written as a very long CV, outlining her accomplishments and responses to problems and issues she faced in different positions.
Her writing is very oriented towards her intentions and the positive results of her policies and initiatives. It lacks critical self-reflection on unintended consequences of her policies ( for example with regards to how the incarceration rate spiked among black communities while she was prosecutor), or what she should have done in a different way. Considering her political ambitions, she has probably wanted to sustain and strengthen the image of herself as a powerful, confident and successful (super)woman and politician who gets things done - she has succeeded in projecting this image and the path she walked certainly demands respect. However, as a reader, I would have found this book much more interesting had she (also) reflected on her doubts, insecurities, regrets, thought processes, how she dealt with misogeny and/or racism.

This reads for what it is: a campaigning tool for the democratic nomination ahead of the 2020 US election. I enjoyed learning about Kamala Harris’ early career and listening to the stories about her mother. The last ~30% of the book is essentially a campaign speech. It is a bit depressing thinking that this competent person could have been at the helm instead of the current disastrous situation.

Well timed given recent events. An inspiring story not only of her career, but how she works to live her values everyday.

I went into reading this not having expectations but being curious and wanting to learn. I ended up loving it!
