This book was a whirlwind. Talk about fast paced and full of action. Tau is one of the most badass figures I have read about and the writing style of Evan Winter does a really good job of describing every fight in gory detail. The only reason this book is not rated higher is because of the lack of a super deep plot, confusing list of characters and roles in society (and I read Sanderson), and a first third that did not grip me. Overall a really interesting book jam packed with action. I will definitely be reading the second book soon.

[a:Evan Winter|17087338|Evan Winter|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1506183476p2/17087338.jpg] does a fantastic job in his debut, [b:The Rage of Dragons|44330000|The Rage of Dragons (The Burning, #1)|Evan Winter|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1563407420l/44330000._SX50_.jpg|57522473]. He keeps the action going, picking up the pace as the book goes along. The way he sprinkles the world lore into the settings is brilliant, giving the reader just enough to understand, but allowing the mystery of the bigger picture to linger. There were a few scenes that told me instead of showing me what was happening, but those were few and far between. I am very excited to read what lies in store for these characters in the next book of The Burning series

An incredibly unlikeable, one-note character who refuses to not behave like an idiot. Interesting worldbuilding too reliant on just using foreign words for things. Don't tell me 17 names for 17 separate classes in your society - show your characters behaving according to the rules of that society. Weird blood purity wank that honestly made me uncomfortable.
Absolutely unrealistic training practices in the "power-up" montage that honestly feel like child endangerment. Some 15 y.o. will read it and will think rest days are not a thing and will get suffocated by lifting equipment or something. If the point of your book to "work hard so you improve" show the main character working hard in a way that is actually possible without dying!
And of course the only female character in the book is the main character's girlfriend who gets murdered so he can get with his future girlfriend in the sequel.
