What a wonderful, enchanting story! I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen, but I continued to be pleasantly surprised to the very end. Highly recommend!

A story full of mysteries and secrets. It surrounds three women from three different time periods. The book begins with Nell learning a secret that changes her life forever. Then you have Cassandra, Nell's granddaughter. When Nell dies Cassandra inherits a cottage in Cornwall and a mystery. And in the past there is Eliza. I loved the way the book was written with perspectives in three time periods. I thought it made the story more suspenseful. I loved the descriptions of the gardens and the cottage.!
slow-paced

It took me entirely too many pages before the story grabbed me. I don't know if the fault was mine or if the story is, legitimately, that slow in the beginning. However, when my interest was piqued, I loved the characters and the twists and turns. It isn't a "typical" book and has a haunting plot.

This book kept me captivated from start to finish. A very well written novel that brings one back to childhood, creating its own fairy tale around the fairy tales of one of the main protagonists, Eliza Makepeace. The book flips back and forth between 2005, 1975 and 1900-1913. It is the story of a woman who learns that her life is not at all what she thought it was, and her search to unravel the mysteries of her past and a family she never knew. It has all the makings of an adult fairy tale, complete with a wicked queen, feeble princess, and misunderstood stepsister.

I would have liked more detail on the relationship between Linus and Georgiana. Otherwise, highly recommended.
emotional mysterious sad

I first read this in 2012 and I have come back to it many times. A beautiful dark story with vivid characters. Absolutely worth a read.
mysterious sad slow-paced

So good! Mystery, tragedy, love, and redemption all ending in a well tied-up ending. I loved following along as each of the main characters discovered her past and future- a story that bound them all together.

I agree with Kirkus Reviews: "Murky, but the puzzle is pleasing and the long-delayed “reveal” is a genuine surprise. "

The search for the parents of an abandoned child take us halfway around the world in the search. Who would have left a child alone on a trip halfway around the world - and why?

I honestly enjoyed this book way more than I thought I would. I read all 550 or so pages in a day, which means that I must have been absolutely engrossed. I will be reading more by this author in the future.
