Very good story--I actually figured out the 'mystery' before it was revealed, which I don't like (and which doesn't happen very often!).

One of my favs for sure! Took me a long time to read but so worth it! I enjoy how all the characters tie together in the end!

This book has now become one of my favorites! I can't say enough good about this story. It answers the age old question "are memories a good thing?" Sure, we all want to have memories. They are the keep sakes we have for our hearts and heads to look back on, to bring a smile to our face, to relive a day with loved ones. But what happened those bad memories? The heart breaks? The loss? There is a moment in this story when the main character, Cassandra and a man she meets, Christian, are discussing this debate and I was so in tuned with this. I often wonder it myself. There are moments I wish I didn't have to remember. But! Then there are so many that I'm so happy I can look back on.

Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It is told through different view points and between different eras and the entire story is intertwined. I took my time with this book and I absolutely loved the story. It also has some magical, childlike fairy tale aspects, which for sure speaks to my soul. I can't wait to read another of her books!

I only picked this for the challenge. I only finished it for the challenge. I don’t think it was my genre.

Funny story: my mum recommended this to me first via text, then a phone call to make sure I noted it down.
When I told her I finally got to it, she couldn’t even remember what the book was about.

Historical fiction, family saga, mystery, drama, fairy tale.

The writing was delectable. Morton knows how paint a picture in your mind. This is a book for readers who love reading, who pay attention to motifs, to readers who have a soft spot for fairytales.

”You must learn to know the difference between tales and the truth, my Liza, she would say. Fairy tales have a habit of ending too soon. They never show what happens afterwards when the prince and princess ride off the page.”

I do think the book was too long and drawn out. It almost felt like a classic at times with the amount of details mused over.

Nell was my least favourite of the three timelines, especially as it felt like she got no satisfying arc.

The audiobook was great. Lilting, magical, and calming. So much so, it lulled me to sleep on a train.
That’s the type of book this is: beautiful, but not one you can binge. It is not excitable or particularly plot-driven.

So, mum - a good, calming recommendation for writing that will stay in my mind even if only the Victorian timeline felt truly riveting, and even then, only at times.

Not one of my favourites, but certainly not the worst, The Forgotten Garden is an interesting mystery (despite the fact that the secret is not particularly difficult to figure out), reminiscent of The Secret Garden (don't let that put you off, it is a highly tangential relationship). What is strong about the novel is it's attention to detail and the author's ability to make the characters visually distinct for the reader. Enjoyable, but not what I think will be particularly memorable.

Da.

This is The Secret Garden meets Possession, and I mean that in a good way. Just shy of 5 stars.
