A charming story for anyone who feels the call of the wild. What I really liked about this one is the fact that the author made the voice feel so child-like and yet still really beautiful and lyrical. The settings are sumptuous, the beautiful autumn forest, the cold mud flats of the Thames - the world here is fully realised and a joy to delve into.

A must-read for autumn lovers of all ages.

I cried a lot. Be warned, if you are the type who cries at books.

This is an amazing book. The tone is a little like Room, although October turns eleven early in this book and Jack was five. But there's the same precocious child leaving a small world for a bigger one idea (and like Jack, October throws a couple of tantrums.) I cried during Room, I should have known I'd cry at this one.

I loved this. I loved discovering the world alongside October, watching as she slowly allows herself to trust people. My heart broke with hers during the bit that you know if you've read it and I won't spoil if you haven't, and I rejoiced with her during her triumphs. It's an absolutely fabulous book, and I think it would work really well as a class novel; there are a LOT of avenues that could be explored after reading.

The illustrations are gorgeous, too. Stig is beautiful in these pictures. And that cover!

I loved this. I can't say anything else, but I'll keep saying that.

I was not expecting to be punched in the feels with this one, as I had no idea what was in store.

Our main character, October, has been raised in the woods with her father her entire 11 years of life. Although her home is close to a local village, all of her learning and living takes place at home, away from society and school, with the exception of a yearly trip to the market.

I'm not sure if the author chose to paint October as someone so little in control of her emotions and actions because she hadn't been properly socialized or, if there was a deeper cause such as she was on the autistic spectrum. Some of her actions made me question this.

This book had a lot of heart, just like the best middle grade books do. It reminded me of one of my favorite books, [b:The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise|39280558|The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise|Dan Gemeinhart|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1535034048l/39280558._SY75_.jpg|57956893], not in terms of theme but in terms of heart. The addition of a pet owl, Thig, thrown in, and it was inevitable that I was going to cry at least once while reading this book.

What a great choice for an October read. I'd fully recommend this one.

It was a lovely read of good people trying their best in a bad situation, with brilliant and immersing narration.
