This book definitely had highs and lows but I really enjoyed this look at early feminism and the plight of women under the oppression of religious society.

Such an interesting book! It wasn’t what I expected, but not necessarily in a bad way. It was rewarding to read about Ada finding her meaning in the world. That being said, it felt like the last third of the book was a little rushed and the ending wasn’t super satisfying. I think it could have been a little longer.

All in all, I liked it!

This was a good and quick read. I enjoyed the idea of the book, but I honestly was not expecting the author to take this route in the story, based on what I read in the blurb- which made it interesting. I enjoyed the characters and the plot, but I do think more depth could’ve been given to both to create a more immersive story.
My biggest problem with this book is I had a lot of difficulty with that immersion aspect. Unlike other books I’ve read, I can easily imagine the setting or the characters. And while the author has great descriptions, I still wasn’t able to picture a lot of what was happening.
While I loved the characters, they are also detached from the reader in a way, where you know a little about them but not enough to create a connection.
For me, this book was only a 3 star until I got to the last quarter of the book where a majority of the action took place, which also could have been elongated.

I think I liked this? I honestly cannot tell. The first 100-150 pages dragged for me, then it picked up quickly and stopped abruptly. I feel like I both know the characters and don't know them at all. Very conflicted about this one.

A barren woman flees first to a convent, then to a life as an outlaw in this novel set in the 1890s midwest US. The story that follows is a gripping outlaw tale, filled with disguises, wagon chases, and living life as a wanted criminal sought by multiple towns. It also is a story about a close-knit group of women and trans masc people trying to find identities when they'd been kicked out by towns that raised them. It portrays a complex life that doesn't gloss over the struggles of survival, while also valuing what it means to survive outside the norm.

I don't typically go for historical fiction, but this one was a feminist story with many LGBTQ+ characters, so I really wanted to give it a try. I will say, the western storyline was not as dry as I thought it was going to be at all. I typically don't care for westerns, but the plot was beautifully interwoven into the setting, which made for a very enjoyable read. I appreciated that the author didn't shy away from difficult topics; the characters were strong and unapologetic. Having a diverse cast of characters was very appealing to me as well.

I definitely recommend this read; however, please be aware of the TW/CW (listed below).
