This was a beautiful, emotional journey - much like Tuesdays with Morrie - except that the author has a few more years under his belt and some additional introspection. I'm not going to give anything away, but the way that the book is written is captivating and hard to put down

I have yet to read a book by Mitch Albom that doesn't pll at my heartstrings and just break me. What a beautiful story of love, faith, determination and never giving up. And an incredible example of how a child can change your life for the better. Grab a box of tissue and read this book!

Sweet and sad. This does bring important awareness to the tragedy that is DIPG.

This book is about Mitch Albom’s experience as the legal guardian of a little girl, Chika, who has the brain tumor: Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). Albom started writing this book one year after Chika’s death, and it’s noticeably a way for him to process his grief. DIPG is an extremely rare, fatal tumor that starts in the pons, which is part of the brain stem and controls vital functions. There is no cure, and current treatments aren’t effective. Most patients don’t survive a year past diagnosis, and it’s the leading cause of childhood cancer deaths. Chika survived just shy of 2 years post diagnosis.
Mitch meets Chika at an orphanage he runs in Haiti; and when he learns that her condition cannot be treated in Haiti, he and his wife bring Chika to their home in the USA for treatment. It’s a very emotional story, especially if you listen to the audiobook. The audiobook is narrated by the author, and he includes audio clips of Chika talking, laughing, and singing. It’s clear Chika was a very joyful child who didn’t let her illness define her. It’s heart wrenching hearing about Chika’s treatments, and the progression of her disease, and her story is a good reminder that we shouldn’t take life for granted.

My 100th book read of 2019 leaves me sobbing. Thank you Mitch Albom, you never disappoint.

So this is one is tricky to rate. I loved Chika and her joy and her humour - she sounds like an incredible little girl, and listening to her clips in the audiobook couldn’t help but make you smile through tears. However, I hated that she was not given a choice in her treatment, or stopping her treatment. Yes, she was only 7. But that is old enough to understand do you want to keep fighting or are you done? Because the people making these decisions were not her parents, and clearly religion played a huge role in the decisions made, and I got the distinct impression here that faith overruled science when it came to some of these treatments. Which is fine if you’re making them for yourself, not a 7-year old from another country under your guardianship. That didn’t sit right. So beautifully told story about a beautiful girl gets 3 stars, motivation behind all of this gets 0 stars.

If you pick up this book you may want to pick up a box of tissues. It is beautiful, and at times heart breaking. I wanted to reach out to the author and give words of encouragement and love, at times my thoughts on various situations that came up.
Each page was from the heart and in my humble option, one of his best works with the written word. The topic of this book is not an easy one to live or read about and Alborn wrote it in such a masterful way so all can read and learn about the trials and lessons that they all went through.
