When I say I devoured this book...I mean that I devoured it like a kid glugging water after playing outside on a hot summer's day. Absolutely loved the writing style. A good balance of descriptions and dialogue. The chemistry between the different characters was super endearing - you could really feel relationships change and bloom like they would in real life. The plot was thoroughly entertaining, although at first I was a little confused about the timeline. The twist in this book was what really made me hungry for more - well-done and not overly predictable. Overall, a super enjoyable read that didn't hurt my brain (because high-fantasy does that often...) and that really made me want to read all the books in the series.

Although the beginning of this book really gripped me, I kind of lost interest about half way through... I liked the world and character building, particularly with the two different races and how they were portrayed, but the story feel away for me a bit. Still, this was an enjoyable fantasy read, and I'd be interested in reading book 2.

This one was pretty upsetting for me. I've heard amazing reviews about this series but the first book fell very short for me. Maybe it's because Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor is one of my favorite fantasy series and The Girl at Midnight was way too smiliar for my tastes. The writing wasn't the best. The constant change of POV had me confused and I had to keep looking back to figure out who's POV I was reading from. I felt like the story was kind of everywhere, especially towards the end. I didn't connect with the characters and if I'm being honest, they all started to kind of annoy me. Overall, not a series for me. If you are able to clear out the comparisons between Daughter of Smoke and Bone and Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo, then this could be a series for you.

Wow. I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. This was one of the most unique stories I have ever read. I loved everything about the world, and the characters were all amazing. Echo is an awesome FMC, she was so funny and witty and impossible to not love. The ending was insane, I was so hooked. I wish it picked up a bit faster, but other than that, it was an incredible story and I  DYING to read the next one! SO UNDERRATED!!

This book really took me by surprise. From the beginning, the world building was great, the magic and history was something that I thought was really original but I thought the characters and writing style would quickly get on my nerves. The characters ended up being ok, a little stereotypical with the heroine constantly saying how mediocre and "normal" she is blah, blah, blah but the writing is was really got to me. It was very descriptive, overly descriptive, like it could of been noticeably shorter if the author cut out half the similes used. And they were all very overused similes. Some people like that, it was just too much for me. Regardless, the sequel is on my to-read list for sure!

I did not have many expectations going into this book. I have seen others read this book and I have been trying to decide whether or not to read it. I am glad that I picked it up! It has a very interesting storyline and I enjoyed the characters plus the plot. I will continue to read the series!

Spoiler The Ala walks into a library to do some reading and comes across a girl. She ends up taking the girl in. The girl decides to name herself Echo. Echo is asked to find the firebird. Along the way, she finds a group of her enemies also trying to find the firebird. They decide to group up. However, Echo does not know that she teamed up with the dragon prince. The dragon prince is also close to this mission because he lost the girl he loved to finding the firebird. Do they find the firebird? Will Echo find out who she has been working with?

3.5 cute characters, nice worldbuilding, but overdone plot and love "sandwich"
