Like a Sister

Kellye Garrett

3.28 AVERAGE

Like A Sister was a BOTM pick for me and I sit somewhere in the middle of it.

The book contained a lot of filler chapters and did not get to the more thriller aspects until it was practically over. I did like the mysterious aspects of the "Who Did it?" but finding out who actually did it was a complete letdown. No one so uninvolved in the story should ever be the Ah-Ha moment.

I thought the book showcased the dysfunctional family relationships better than the thriller itself and that is why I am giving it three stars. It was the stories within the family that kept me turning page after page.

I loved the similes and descriptions, but at a certain point there were too many. The author is clearly smart and hilarious, but also I feel like it was too much of a good thing.

I was so tired of reading “shitnuts” just a few chapters in. I get that people have a thing they say a lot, but in a written form it gets to be a lot.

Why did she latch on to the Karma stuff? There’s literally no link to that, but it’s an obsession that is unrelated, just like the car accident. How would she “know” they were linked? Also, she’s not who she says she is and everyone knows it, and yet they’re like, “sure, keep a key to my house and stay here, that’s cool”

What’s with the constant wrist scratching? Is it because of the bracelets or what?

What does the reporter care at all? It just seems like such an odd link, who kills someone so they can sell their biography? And if she’s sort of a B list star anyway, why’s he got a book deal so fast?

What kind of crazy person kills a neighbor outside in broad daylight, pushes her in a bush, and NO ONE sees? ESPECIALLY when it’s been established that her dad knows something is fishy and he’s having her watched for her protection. That really should have come through for her in the end.

And then Karma kills the murderer, which is sort of a funny play on words, but also WTF.

All in all, it was a bit too plot soup for me. 1.5 stars, rounded up.

I found it hard to get invested in this book right off the bat because it started off really slow with not much going on. With that being said the second half was so fast passed I could hardly keep up!

I was so invested in trying to solve the mystery of who killed Desiree Pierce. I can honestly say I had no ideas where this plot was going. Every time there was a new suspect I was 100% on board. Then we got more information that had me on the edge of my seat.

I enjoyed Lena as the main character. You could tell she honestly regretted her fall out with her sister, and could help but wish their story had a different ending. I also really enjoyed Erin even though I couldn’t fully trust her.

I enjoyed the fast paced nature of the ending because it really got me invested, but I wish it wasn’t as rushed. I still a little confused with the lot I’ve if the person that ended up being the killer. Overall this was an engaging mystery and I enjoyed it!

2.5 stars. The motivation for the twist wasn’t flushed out but I didn’t guess the reveal ahead. I enjoyed all the characters. Reviews saying race wasn’t important ???? im a young black girl in nyc, Lena is spot on

43% DNF
it kicked off with the death (no spoiler it literally begins there) and at 43% in there has been two new things you learned about the sister that aren’t that shocking and I just can’t wait around with this slow burn for another 57%

Did not want to put this down to go to bed!! This was my first book by this author and I’m ready to see what else she has out there. It was a quick read but also had you on the edge of your seat.
Loved the Usher reference thrown in as I’m a huge Usher fan.

I love Kellye Garrett and her writing. While this book is definitely different than her Hollywood Homicide books, it's still another great one. This audiobook is very well done and the narrator, Bahni Turpin, is talented. I always love listening to Bahni Turpin as the narrator on audiobooks and she did great with this one. She really brought the story to life, also the characters, and brought their personalities out, which added to the listening experience.
This story is a good one. It's a mystery/thriller about Lena Scott and her half-sister, Desiree Pierce is found dead. Lena becomes the unofficial detective in the case of her half-sister's death, which they claim is due to a drug overdose, but Lena doesn't think it adds up. As Lena starts to investigate, she finds more questions than answers to everything. Lena checking into things and trying to find/figure out what happened with Desiree brings out complicated family dynamics and relationships that have to be navigated to help figure out what happened. I love Lena and her character and this engaging and great thriller.
Thanks so much to Hachette Audio for letting me listen to and review this ALC. Make sure to check this out and give it a listen. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It kept me interested and started out really good, but the ending was bad. Just didn't make any sense. And be prepared for a lot of "shitnuts". That got annoying.

This might make a less than mediocre lifetime movie.
