Senseless animal cruelty was the last straw. There are lots of ways to tell me a character is evil, pointless cruelty is the least creative.
I do most of my reading by audio these days and the narration on this was really monotone and hard to listen to. I can usually get through 4-7 hours at a time, this I would listen to an hour and feel like I missed half, so have to go back, etc. I think it’s partly writing style and partly the monotonous narration. It’s a bummer but there’s so many other books to read that don’t read like pulling teeth, so yeah…

This has a nostalgic, classic fantasy feel. You can clearly see how The Dragonbone Chair influenced authors like George R. R. Martin and Robin Hobb.
Simon is hard to connect with. He’s bland, often frustrating, and very much a clueless 15-year-old. I often wished we had more perspectives from characters like Josua, Maegwin, Miriamele, or even Pryrates, who all felt more complex and compelling. Thankfully, Binabik and his wolf bring wisdom and charm. I’m curious to learn more about the trolls and the Sithi.
Some of the abrupt shifts to political scenes were a bit disruptive and hard to follow. I enjoyed the prose, and I’ll continue the series to see how Simon develops and how the world’s cultures unfold.

Whoa, I finished!!
This was a feat, and a journey that I'm glad I finally started. Classic fantasy at its best, truly this was a wonderful read. But boy oh boy is this world slow and a bit dense. That doesn't bother me per se, but for a lot of readers the length and drawn out movement of the plot will be a hurdle they fail to clear.
I enjoyed our MC, a young boy with dead parents, who was raised in the kitchens of the castle always underfoot. He finds himself taken under the wing of a mysterious elder within the castle who teaches him history, and some other life lessons. Those lessons are short lived (I mean come on you see where this is going) as our MC finds himself in the center of a larger political and magical plot.
The side characters were great, I enjoyed them a ton, the politics are intense at times. Lots of names, lots of places, lots of history but it all comes together really nicely. The writing is fabulous, even though this book is objectively SLOW I was always into it and wanting to read more. I will continue in this world, I just need a few buffer books to balance this one out before diving into book 2 hahaha
