The perspectives in this book were ones not often seen in Civil War novels. I appreciated this aspect of the book and thought it was its greatest strength.
Overall though I didn’t find this book to be particularly special in any way. It was a quick read that but it did not have much depth or character development. I never felt connected to anyone or even the story.
I gave it 3⭐️ because it’s not a book I’ll read again but I did finish it and didn’t ever dislike it per se. I likely won’t recommend it unless someone specifically asks for books set during the Civil War because this is at least a varying perspective on that time period

I love historical fiction about certain chapters in history: WWII, Communist Europe, Civil War, Civil Rights. Set in the south at the time of the Civil War, The Thread Collectors is the story of love and friendship between unlikely characters: a Black slave who runs away to enlist and a white Jew from NY who volunteers to prove himself worthy of his wife. Both men are musicians and bond through their music. Both love their women fiercely and yearn to survive the war. While I admired the characters and their determination to survive in the face of adversity and contribute to the war efforts in their own ways, I found the details of the story too repetitive.
Audiobook. Tbh a little slow for me, but important perspectives of civil war histories from often overlooked communities.
