full of violence and murder, but ERB does a fantastic job writing a majority of the book without dialogue.
the ending felt something to be desired but onto the return of tarzan!

After watching the movie Tarzan that just came out I decided to try one of the books it was based on. What fun! In the vein of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson this is a fun survival tale. Hardly realistic but high adventure none the less! Some of the descriptions of the African natives might be offensive to some but other than that nothing overly vulgar or sensual.

Pacing: 5/5
Characters: 4/5 (a bit cartoony)
idea: 5/5 (at the time, a bit dated now because of the huge number of times it's been ripped off)
believability: 1/5

So many things were near impossible to believe in this story. I won't go into details because it would be spoilers, but suffice it to say you'll either be rolling your eyes or throwing the book across the room. I just rolled my eyes. If you are the kind of person to toss unbelievable books across the room, you probably won't enjoy this.

It had a great concept: what would happen if a baby were raised by apes? It started off very well and I was really enjoying the plot and style of writing, but then it became all about proving that white males are superior to all other species. Once Tarzan started growing up, there were all kinds of remarks about how capable and smart he was, simply because he was human, and he was able to teach himself things like basic math and reading. At that point, the whole book became about the author proving that white males are superior to everything else, and it pretty much ruined the rest of the story.

No one should read this book anymore. Racism is the only thing fueling anyone’s intentions and motives. The minority characters and all animals are simply there to die by the hand of a tyrannical white man who is so incredibly fucked up he would be a serial killer by today’s standards.

Never. Ever. Read this book.
