This get three stars (when I want to give 2) because it is a decent book, that I just didn't happen to get into.
Don't get me wrong, there were times that had me gasping out loud and saying "NO!..." in public but it just didn't quite make the list for me.
It's decently written, though frustrating because of all the secrets being held back until the end, yes, suspense, yes, something to keep you reading bla bla bla. I just don't like it.
though I love YA, this just seemed a little to heavy on the 'Young' factor, despite all the awful scenes that occur.
it's a decent read, might give it another go later down the track, see if it's just my current mindset.

The Knife of Never Letting Go is about a world that everyone's come to 20 years earlier for religious freedom. Much like the settlers to America, the new planet is even called New World. That's where the similarities stop. Every man on this worlds thoughts are free for everyone to hear and it's tearing them all apart because (and I love how Ness makes this clear in the book) unlike women, men can't handle hearing each others thoughts. Secrets are slowly (sometimes annoyingly so) revealed through the eyes of the main character Todd, a nearly 13 year old boy, who was born on the planet.
Ness's narrative voice is both fascinating in some places and annoying in others, using single lines to point out thoughts, making single sentences full paragraphs, and misspelling words to show Todd's literary failings.
It is a book that I didn't want to put down though, I very much enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.

This was a good book, but very strange in that it deals with what I thought were serious issues but in a different way. Like why there are no women in the town Todd lives in, only Todd finds out the real reason slowly after he has left. I loved the way the writing slowly revealed information to the reader as the main character gets further away from his home town.
I greatly enjoyed it and would have given it five stars, but there was one thing I didn't like: the language the author uses. The world he has built is full of people from an "old world" settling in a new one. Over the course of twenty odd years the main character's community has lost reading and writing - so the main character (who is 13 years old) talks like "tho" instead of though. I only dislike this because I don't love dialect speech, but that's just me.

Prior to me reading The Knife of Never Letting Go I had only read one Patrick Ness book. A Monster Calls. I enjoyed it a lot, but now, after finishing this, the first book in the "Chaos Walking Trilogy", I have seen just how great a writer Ness is, and this book blows the excellent Monster Calls out of the water, as far as I'm concerned.
This blew me away. Truly. A story of noise and fear and hope. Ah, hope. We follow Todd Hewitt, his dog Manchee, and a girl named Viola, as they try to escape an army hot on their trail. An army of men who want to see them fall. A dystopian science-fiction story about friendship and finding out the truth, it takes so many twsts and turns and keeps you on the edge of your seat right up until the final sentence. I loved it. Without going further into the story (I dont wanna spoil it for anyone) I have to recommend this to, well... everyone. I will be picking the second book from my shelf rea soon.

Prolly unfair, but I threw this book aside in favor of the next one when Eh. Too many books in my backlog to continue with a book that pissed me off.
Spoiler
the dog was killed. I'm just tired of books that make me care about the dog and then kill them.
