I'm well aware of what this series lacks. It asks the reader to suspend all of their disbelief, stuff it in a box, and forget about it. Humans = stupid poopyheads since they fail to get they live on sufferance. Others = a cross between doggos and bloodthirsty beasts. Meg and Simon = Ross and Rachel at glacial speed. Repetitive prose about color-changing hair = All. The. Time. Plot of this book = unrealistic since it doesn't align with what has been going on in the first two. I mean Meg has been fine living in the Courtyard for a long time and only now do we discover she can get overstimulated?
So, why do I rate it 3 stars and not one? Because it's my feel-good book. And so, onwards we go!

I was so happy to pick this book off because I had just read the previous two books back to back. It started off strong and I flew through the first 250 pages. However, once the main "action" happened I felt that the story just dragged. The last fifty pages took me three days to read.
it was such a good I loved it so much I couldn't put it down I know it says I took forever but I finished in like three days
More politics and less Meg in this one knocks it down a notch for me, but still a very enjoyable read.

I think I get why some people rate this series lower, but it really works for me. I don't know why, but I love the slow, slow, SLOW burn of the plot in this series. It seems more natural than the non-stop action found in some other series. I think it also helps to not force the characters to be in situations they aren't suited for because it gives them the chance to mature into their roles.
I also appreciate the use of some very simple - yet often overlooked themes: the power of kindness, self-accountability, and teaching through example. Sure there's the theme of corrupt politics, but what I really enjoyed was that the characters make mistakes, get called out on it, and are not allowed to play the victim to get out of all responsibility.
Like all my reviews, these are just my random thoughts at the moment of finishing the book.
