The Midnight Star

Marie Lu

4.02 AVERAGE

Really good from start to finish!!

Since this is the last book of the series, Marie Lu has done a really good job of the characterisation and getting into the mythology of her world. I found that compared to the last two books, this one is written very strongly and you really start to get into Adelina's head.

I won't spoil the ending, but it ties everything together perfectly and is also pretty surprising!

Easily 5 stars.

Okay i seriously want to give it 5 stars but something just stopped me. I remember how in love i am to the second book which is why my expectation to this last one is high HIGH like i really really dying to finally read this. But uh, seriously, Lu?

Okay. The first half and the last half of this book is amazing, like the previous books one. I love how the characters developed; like all of them are developed, even Teren and Maeve and all the relationships are finally established. Even Adelina's who is considered almost "helpless", and Raffaele who regrets how he act when he first met Adelina.. wow that shits is so great. I also love the ending, to be honest. It is very well written. Matched perfectly for the entire series. Like, that's what the author told us to expect from the very beginning. It also give justice to Adelina in better way than if Lu let her alive and that just amazing.

What make me hard to give this 5 stars is because of its middle chapters. It almost like when Lu writes the entire chapters in the middle, she is high or something. Everything is lazily written, lack of explanation, lack of description, suddenly we have this conclusion with no logical reason, suddenly this, suddenly that. Too much coincidence, et cetera. The plot is also suddenly becoming too fast, too quick, we almost left like 'huh' and 'uhh!' every second. We lost grip of the pace, loss of feeling, lost connection for the whole middle section. We are left plain with nothing to grip. This what makes it suddenly feels dull, boring, and almost look like it was written by a high school student for some reason. I hate the in-between chapters so much because it ruins the beauty of the other chapters in the first half and the last half.

But anyways, this book is still worth to read tho. Just learn to survive in the lazily written chapters. The plot is okay and the characters are even more stunning in this book. Straight up 4/5.

Also im f***** /mad/ to Lu for not making Enzo and Raffaele canon but that's on me lmao.

Great ending. I really enjoyed this series.

I feel dead inside

I finally finished this series! It took me a long time because it took me awhile to get back to wanting to read about Adelina, because she's kind of the worst.  However, I really enjoyed her story arc in this book.  It was decently fast paced, and a pretty good conclusion to the series.  I certainly can't complain about that!  It didn't really blow me out of the water, but I definitely enjoyed the ending.

I can’t believe I finished it. I’m broken hearted but also healed. It was a BEATIFUL and heart felted story about a villain. There was also love and tears. I cried through the last chapters. That is a sign of how good it was.

Although I feel sad and heartbroken for the ending given to us. I also feel joy and a sense of accomplishment because the story ends for us, but not for them. For the characters the story goes on and on. That fact is just beautiful. Knowing they had their own unique and tale like end fills my heart with excitement and love. Even if I wished to have seen them with the typical happy ending.
Adelina has grown so much as a MC, all of them have. But I was shocked/surprised at how our MC was given a second chance. I guess there is goodness even with the evillest. One act does not define us but the acceptance of the act and how we decide to solve it does define us to an extent. Adelina’s story proves it. Evil or not, she was a girl hurt by society and everyone. Who hated and destroyed others, but also felt love and joy and hope, who could also be merciful and selfless.

It was heart melting to see this girl achieve her true happiness, once she allowed herself to follow her deepest desire/decision. She outgrew herself, not only at the end but along her story. Even if she didn’t see that herself.

I'm definitely one of the few people who fall into the encampment of those who didn't really like the ending as much. I have my problems with it, and part of that was probably because I listened to most of it as an audiobook and read only about 100 pages. But thinking about it now that I've finished the book, I feel like my biggest issue is that I didn't feel satisfied.
slow-paced

I've always loved how this series doesn't shy away from being too dark, but at some point it becomes harder to empathize with the characters. Personally I felt that this one went a little too far; it makes for thrillingly horrific reading, but I find it hard to really like a story if I can't find reasons to genuinely like the cast, particularly the mains. Also, I wasn't very happy with the ending.
