I also think I'm just tired of the grumpy, emotional-stunted men I see too often in contemporary romance and romantasy books. The idea of the men finally realizing things because of a woman... Girl, please. I'm so tired. Cam and Hazel acted like they were in their 20s, not their 30s. A lot of interactions between them were simply cringe, and I could almost tolerate it between Zoey and Hazel because they've been best friends since they were younger.
I did like the Bishops in general, though. They seem like a fun crowd and genuine individuals, Cam sort of notwithstanding. I imagine the plan is to have a book about each brother, but tbh, if there was a book about Laura too, I might consider reading another Lucy Score book. As of right now... No. I have other books to read that I might enjoy more. The writing here was nothing to write home about.

This is one of the most fun rom-coms I’ve read. It’s a slightly meta take on the big city girl moves to a small town and finds love with the hunky local grump trope. But add in some over the top, almost slapstick level hijinks - she gets hit in the face by a fish-wielding bald eagle on her way into town, as just one example. The entire cast of local townsfolk get their own special nod for being delightful oddballs, from the teenaged town mayor to the “journalist” who reports the latest local gossip via the Neighborly app.
There are some hard topics included here too and they are dealt with in an appropriately serious nature, but (maybe also a little over the top in the unrealistic department) in the end there is an uplifting message of love and family found through grief and a happy ending for all.
I loved this so much more than I could have predicted, even after reading and loving the Knockemout series. I can’t wait to go back to Story Lake for the rest of this series.
