At first I was hesitant about combining first person passages with actual diary entries, but I found it to be very effective. I liked the art style and I was glad they didn’t gloss over her politics or bisexuality.
I wanted to read [b:El placer|50804267|El placer|María Hesse|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1562776705l/50804267._SX50_SY75_.jpg|71868146], but they didn’t have it in my library yet, so I picked up this one and I definitely don’t regret it. I didn’t know much about Frida Kahlo, so considering the amount of information, this was perfect. And the illustrations are gorgeous variations of Frida’s own paintings.
I have two nit-picks though and that the author isn’t able to distinguish between right and left. She tells us repeatedly that it is Frida’s right leg that is “ill”, and yet in all the illustrations (with one exception with just her feet) it’s the left leg that is painted as the ill one. Including that painting with just her boots… It’s quite shallow, I know, but I was irritated by that the whole time I read it and it snapped me out of the story.
The other thing is that although we are told that at the last years of her life, her lovers were mostly female, in the 10 portraits of her lovers we only get two women, but that can have a logical explanation…
As a whole, interesting and inspiring book depicting one unusual life. Life of a woman unbelievably full of life confined in a slowly dying body.
"To build a wall around your suffering is to risk that it will eat you up from the inside out”—Frida Kahlo
