Honestly I was a little disappointed in how she ended it. This felt more like a traditional Nora Roberts romance novel and not the epic fantasy I wanted.

In all honesty, this isn’t my favorite genre so after book two in the series, and after reading reviews of book three I decided to do something I rarely do - just read the last chapter. In my opinion, the series is good, especially if you enjoy “paranormal suspense” with a bit of romance.

I want to say up front that your mileage may vary, and you could like this final book in the trilogy much more than I did.

I also want to say that the quality of the writing is easily a 4.5.

SPOILER ALERT! Read no more if you don't want the ending revealed.

Book One I loved. The introductions of magics into the world was well done. There was high tension, lots of drama, love and betrayal, the book really had everything.

Book Two was still good. Lots of "how the chosen one prepares" type of thing. Not the most exciting, but still well done.

Book Three: let's see, the main character can transport instantly into or out of any situation, which lowers the danger level of any operation she's in. So does the fact that she magically knows every spell ever written. And so does the fact that she can heal herself and her friends of pretty much any wound that isn't immediately fatal.

That was the problem. There was never a moment in Book 3 where I felt Fallon was actually in danger, or when I thought there was a possibility she wouldn't triumph at the end.

The confrontation with Big Bad #2 (her aunt) was over quickly. No build up. No collateral damage.

In a war across the planet, between titanic forces of good and evil, the main character doesn't lose a single family member. She loses one secondary friend. That's it.

And don't get me started on the characters we loved in the first novel. Because they never aged, despite 20-odd years passing. Magic exists, I get it, but not all of these people have magic. But as her parents age, they take on more high-intensity combat roles, never tiring, never wounded, never even out of breath.

Finally, the ultimate reason for the 3-star rating is that I've read this author's other work and enjoyed it. She knows how to build tension, how to keep a reader on the edge of their chair. This time out, she gave us a heroine so full of magic that there was never a moment we were allowed to believe she might not win. And that was disappointing.
