One man and 5 people who have influenced his life with love and relationships.
Set in Ireland Maurice tells you the story of his life.
A book worth reading

The narrator is incredible- if you're going to read this book, I highly recommend the audio. That being said - before you decide to read this book, seriously consider the content warnings. This book is incredibly well written.

Very boring and blindingly predictable. A book clearly written by a woman wanting to pass as a man and failing. A woman who has no idea what someone in this situation would do or think. This book was shite.

There’s just no way an aged man, drunk, depressed, would remember full conversations from sixty years ago. He wouldn’t remember every meal and the smell of each.

Absolutely no part of the book rang true. I found it an abysmal mess. The wording was off. The cadence was off. The details were way off. Nothing worked.

I am generously giving it two stars as I can tell the author worked quite hard.

If you are stuck reading this, take a tip from the protagonist and get drunk - it helps.

This is my first five star rating because WOW. I’ll admit that I started this book and just couldn’t get into it so put it down and read two others before picking it back up again and started again from the beginning. With fresh eyes, I was hooked. Throughout the toasts, I felt as though I were sitting with Maurice as he remembered his life and the impact the five individuals had on him. I was willing him to say more, ached for it. And then he did. His recording for Kevin pushed me to tears and this review to five stars. What an emotional punch and the exact right note to leave Maurice and the reader. It was perfection.
