I wish more of the stories were more like murder mysteries but I enjoyed the diversity of topics. I felt a little bit like I was suckered into reading something with substance. It's not a bad thing, just unexpected.

It might have been me but I didn't really understand the string that wove these stories together other than they were covered by the same journalist and involved crime in someway. Some stories were interesting like the French man pretending to be an orphan, but others like Henderson the baseball player dragged and didn't make sense in the context of the book.
I usually love David Granny's books but this was disappointing.

This collection of essays is not really about Sherlock Holmes. It can loosely be characterised as about mysteries, crime or extraordinary people. It started life as a series of feature articles and they are extremely disparate.
Therefore, the book is quite hit-and-miss - I was riveted by some stories, and left feeling meh about others. Worth a look if you like essays, but not if you're in it for Sherlock Holmes.
